headlong hunt [browser]

Play the role of a field biologist as you survey the population of a fearful but very fast animal across 37 icy islands in the puzzlescript puzzler Headlong Hunt by Toombler. (Z key to undo a move, R key to restart a level)

I thought I was doing pretty good.
Until I got to the bridge with 9 crystal squares.
Puzzlescript you win again, Grrr..!

And stuck at 19.

I don't get it 8(

@Anon (Level 19)

Hint #1: Your first move is to send the bird to the rightmost bush

Hint #2: Bushes with water on two sides, on this level at least, are obstacles, as it's hard to scare the bird out of them in a horizontal direction.

Hint #3: This isn't a level where you can set-up the whole path the bird will travel to the goal and then set it off. A certain bush exists to let you prepare the final path to the goal while the bird is in close proximity. ie it will let you move past the bird and circle around it.

Stuck at 21

Anonymous said...

Level 21: I manage to move the bird to the set of 3 bushes at the right, but then I think I need it to move up 1 bush, but I can't avoid destroying this bush while trying to avoid the bird fleeing away.

Frobisher said...

@Anon (Level 21)

There's a new mechanic here – what new thing can you do if you are hidden in a bush next to the bird-in-a-bush? Is there something you'd normally avoid that you haven't tried?

Anonymous said...

Any suggestions for 17?

Frobisher said...

@anon (level 17)

Level 17 is a riff on an earlier level layout.

Hint #1: what might the rocks on the right be used for?

Hint #2: the bushes aren't relevant to the solution (my solution at least), nor is the passageway at the top of the level

Hint #3: When you've got the bird to this position you can rearrange the boxes without fear of it flying away.

Hint #4: The key is to use one arrangement of boxes to be able to produce another arrangement of boxes (see here) that will let you solve the level from the bottom rather than on the top path.

I find it demoralizing to have this many levels; like, I'm enjoying it... but I'm not going to be enjoying it *37 levels' worth*

Break it up into sub-games if there's this much content, imo

Anonymous said...

Made it all the way to level 29 and got stuck. The goal seems to be to get the bird against the rock to the right of its starting point, and then with the box below the goal, scare the bird from above. Also seems that the box closest to you at the start is useless, since it's blocking the only viable path to the right side of the level.

Tounetou said...

For level 29 :
- you're right : the first box is useless.
-The bird needs to make only two moves

Hope that helps

Squirrel said...

I sailed right through 21, only to be completely stuck on 22 and 23. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

Tounetou said...

-22 : The bird should go up the green line, not below
-23 : After bringing the bird to the vertical green line, do the opposite of what you think

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the help on 17. I finally was able to get an idea from what you said!

Anonymous said...

Need more help on 29.
If the bird needs only 2 moves, then it must move right to the rock, then down to the exit blocked by the square.
To remove the bush at the right of the bird and move the sqaure, I have to go through the bush at the top, and then there is no way to go back to the left of the bird and scare it to the right.
What am I missing?

Anonymous said...

Finally got 29: use the square at the top when the bush is gone.

Anonymous said...

found a couple almost solutions to 36, but nothing quite there..

Anonymous said...

power of posting. i'm out!

Anonymous said...

I'm on the last level, #36. Has anyone figured it out? I wonder, based on the storyline, if this last one is even possible.

Anonymous said...

Could use some help on #36

Frobisher said...

I beat the last level before it got fixed, and there's a little sequence that follows it, so it should be beatable!

Not sure how to solve 36 or the fixed version of 37 though :/

Frobisher said...

The closest I've got to solving 36 (I think) is this partial solution, which uses the bushes to get the box around to the top without scaring away the bird. Unfortunately, I can't get myself back around to scare the bird northwards, and I can't see a way to do the same moves while preserving the lefthand bush that would allow me to circle back.

hmmmm!

Unknown said...

Frobisher, Yes, I've gotten to that point too. How to get it that way while leaving a bush to walk behind?

Frobisher said...

This is one level where the design makes me wonder if I'm overlooking something in the bottom row of bushes:
https://imgur.com/a/2dGE8x3

Following this path through the level, you end up in a similar situation to the previous nearly-solution, where having the bottom-right bush available would let you circle round and get the bird in position. Solving it that way round also brings the structures to the right into play..

Anonymous said...

Power of posting! I finally got it! Wow!

Anonymous said...

hint if youre not convinced 36 is possible: there's not much to push the bird against, so you have to use the box creatively. in what situation can you recover the box without disturbing the bird?

hint #2 for 36: you leave the box in one place, and it gets used in two ways. all 5 bushes are necessary.

hints for 37: indeed you need to use all 3 sections, and the bird does need to progress from left to right. towards the right half, what else can you push the bird against, to get the correct horizontal alignment to finish the level?

the only bush not necessary to this level is on the far right.

Anonymous said...

need more hints for #37 please

Anonymous said...

when you say the bush on the far right, for #37, is not used. Do you mean the one that is in line next to two other bushes? Are you sure you didn't mean the one on the far left?

Anonymous said...

ok, figured out #37. the bush I didn't use was the lone one on the right at the very top.

Anonymous said...

21? Anything?

Anonymous said...

For 21, you have to push the animal up out of the middle bush on the right, onto the killed bush that you walked over

Tounetou said...

For #36, you have to put the box in only two location. The first is on a tree, the second just below the exit

Niki said...

I am completely flummoxed by #24. Am I wrong in thinking that the critter needs to pushed down into the trap? Or least down into the bush adjacent to the trap?

I can't seem to get the right positioning going into the bush so I can nudge it into the trap.
TIA

Frobisher said...

@Niki (Level 24)

You're right about needing to nudge it into the trap. If you work backwards from there, it'll become clear where you need to manoeuvre the critter to get it into that position. There's a number of nudges required, mixed in with some tradition bush scares, and the challenge is to figure out which sets of bushes are for nudging and which for scaring.

Any hints for level 34?

Anonymous said...

For 34 you have to get the bird below the rock on the left side, and the block on the left side moved to the center lined up with the bird. Something to remember is if you move to a spot that has a bush on it, the bird won't flee even if he's next to you and in the open so long as your next move takes you out of its line of sight.

And don't work on the right side until you have the bird moved over there.

Anonymous said...

Dang, level 30's got me stumped. Been hooked on this game for days now. Need to get through it so that normal life can resume!

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous: For level 30, the comment in the code "forces push crate forward then go back" gives it away once you think laterally about it. Push the box up past the bush while still hiding in it, then retreat the way you came.

Anonymous said...

Lvl 33 hint? Really hard.

Frobisher said...

@Anon (level 33)

Hint #1: Where is the only place (bush) from which the bird can fly into the goal? What path would you need to follow to get it to fly into the goal? This has to mean extracting the block from the right, as you'll need it to stop the bird flying to the right when you're moving around to get it to the exit.

Hint #2: The only way to get the bird to fly to the left from its starting position is to get the block above it, so you can circle around

Hint #3: Each of the top row of three bushes has a specific function, one for you, one for the crate and one for the bird. Which of the bushes will let you get the bird to the bush we talked about in hint 1?

Anonymous said...

Thank you @Frobisher - that took a bit of time to interpret, but I had been completely missing that L 33 technique. Through now.

I have a great time playing this game.

So far the progress is:
-- Scare the creature to the finish
-- Use blocks to stop the creature
-- Use blocks to hide from the creature
-- Use bush to stop the creature
-- Use bush to hide from the creature
-- Learn to push the creature true the bush

What is the next trick I need?

FredPoup said...

big hints #36:
the block on the upper bush - scare the creature against it
make the creature go below the top rock (block no needed for this)- scare it against the block
move the block under the exit
scare the creature from above...

FredPoup said...

Cool ending! :)

Squirrel said...

Very cool indeed!

Stuck @37. Got bird to bottom of right section, but crate stuck next to it so can't be moved up towards the bushes or trap. The "what else can you push the bird against, to get the correct horizontal alignment to finish the level?" hint given above makes me wonder if there's something vital that I'm missing (obviously is because I'm stuck). Is there a hidden pushable object that I don't know about or something odd like that?

Toombler said...

@Anonymous There’s nothing new introduced in the final level. In fact it’s sort of a round-up of techniques used throughout the game.

Is it weird for me to comment here? It feels almost like I’m intruding ;)

Anonymous said...

@Toombler: I kind of figured you'd be lurking ;)

Anonymous said...

@Toombler - also thanks for that reassurance! Made me stop barking up the wrong tree and I quickly identified a more or less obvious alternate strategy that did the trick. Well done on devising a truly remarkable set of challenging puzzles!

Stuck on #28. The 'obvious way' is to move the bird into the right pair of bushes, push it out, but then can't move around to scare it to the bottom block.

I'm obviously missing something (or the bushes are red herrings). Any help appreciated

Toombler said...

@Lighty re: 28
Sounds like you’re pretty much on the right track.

Hint: What affordance do you have which would allow you to move up past it?

Thanks @Toombler, was trying to put the block in position before pushing the bird out, didn't occur to me to move the block afterwards! simple really.

Stuck here https://imgur.com/a/aPCZi1T

I start by pushing one block to the left to cover me and one at the right to block him. Can't figure out how to get him to the exit without driving him into the water. Any hints are appreciated.

a12r13 said...

@Anonymous 22:51 : you actually need to drive him through the water...

Got #36, with a solution using exactly all bushes...
Very nice game.

a12r13 said...

I meant #37....

My walthrough here : https://youtu.be/qpudAWTfglY
(and my re-mistake : my level 37 solution does not use one bush - the one on the right on the upper line)
