Not a fan.
I suffered through years of text based games back in the day.
This is even less than the first I played 40 years ago.

To be fair I should add that the free text based games we made in school were just as bad & sometimes worse.

I really tried and I got the first item but once I got to the door I got confused and frustrated and just gave up. I don't understand it.

The door is...
The simplest puzzle in the whole game.
On easy mode, you can just type "Use Key".
The only change in hard is that you're not allowed to use "use", so the command becomes "unlock door with key".
It's essentially a game of figuring out which item to use on which obstacle (and, on hard mode, figuring out the correct phrasing).

This game is only beatable by chance. There exist more than 11 possible enemies/obstacles in this game, and there are only 11 items. It's also worth mentioning that some obstacles require different commands. For instance, the door. if you use break door with X on it, you do not have to lose the key. However, the game does not inform you of these commands, you have to try them randomly yourself to find them. One obstacle was even two parts, I used the knife on the glass, and then had to type break glass. Some items work on multiple foes, ex, you can use the key on the glass, or the bone, extinguisher, or steak with the dog, perhaps even more items. I have yet to beat it, not because I do not understand the game, but because the game is pure rng, which I heavily dislike.

Took me forever to figure out that the first item to drop is the fire extinguisher. Then everything else fell into place.

I played on easy mode.
I tried to break down the door.
I tried to open the door.
I tried to unlock the door.
I also tried the above with items.
I even used various wordings.
You were right that "use key" worked.
I remembered my first text game.
It always used 2 word commands.
A verb and a noun.
If this is the case they should have said so.

There is no random chance in the game, actually.
The order is random, yes. But on every playthrough, you will always encounter every obstacle.
And indeed, there are more obstacles than items. The solution, then, is to solve a few obstacles without any items...?

I got through - in both modes......................

I'm the author. Indeed, as Gentlecat said, there is no random chance in the game. Only the order of obstacles is randomised but you will always face the same set of obstacles. Unwinnability is a part of the game, and signposted in easy mode. If I explained all the rules, the game would have less to discover. Know this, the game is always 100% completed from the beginning after you understand the game better. You can certainly make the game unwinnable. Typing CHEAT will let you know if the game is unwinnable (in easy mode). In hard mode, it's up to you to figure it out.

Sorry it's frustrating some people. It was designed as a short game, where you gain knowledge through making mistakes. The whole game can be aced in less than 2 minutes, so I don't see unwinnability as cruel in this context.

The Path was written with Adventuron (adventuron.io), which is a programming language for making HTML (desktop + mobile) text adventure games. The tutorial is targeted at younger children - sorry if that's not ideal.

If it's been a week, perhaps you should take a rest?

Made it through pretty well until the thousands of ants. Only have the juicy steak and climbing gear. Any hints?

Anonymous said...

What on earth do I do with these ants?

Anonymous said...

I used the fire extinguisher on the ants and it worked.

I cannot figure out a way to get past the skeleton...

I never knew that in my life I would feel like I want to punch a game.

I liked the game, but I was a bit annoyed to find that "not cheating" does not change the ending as it suggests.

I've played so many times. I know there's a work around on a few of the obstacles but I can't figure them out;

There is a solution to the game in the comments at the bottom of the page.

And the game is only non solvable if you choose the wrong object to sacrifice at the beginning. The order of the obstacles is semi randomised, but it's always the same set of obstacles. The randomisation is to purposefully disorientate, but not to make unfair.

What do I do for the skeleton. I'm confused?!?!

The Skeleton wants a bone, or a key (a skeleton key).
