This might be stupid, but I don't get how the numbers are clues for the dials? I found a walkthrough, so I solved it, but the positions aren't what they would be if you turned the dials the number of times the clue says.
To Anonymous @5:31, the numbers refer to the hours on a clock face, so you turn the dials so they point to the corresponding hours.

However, puzzle format has changed & item descriptions are no longer -- or at least that I could see. That was half the fun!
